The Architecture of Perception: Introduction

publication

Back in 1984 I completed my master's thesis Robert Ashley's Atalanta (Acts of God): The Architecture of Perception. I spent many hours interviewing Robert Ashley and was saddened by his death on March 3, 2014. I decided to post several chapters of this thesis as a memorial to his work and his music. This is the Preface and Introduction.

From the PREFACE

I have been acquainted with Robert Ashley's music since 1980. My own concern in art havd, in the two years prior to1980, evolved from painting to performance. The common ground between my painting and my performance was the investigation of narrative structures. It was natural that I would be attracted to such diverse artists as playwright/director Richard Foreman and composer Robert Ashley. While the academic formalism and exquisitly composed visual theatrical productions of Richard Foreman gave me a clue to the composition of my own productions, it was Ashley's emphasis on storytelling and his particular stage presence while performing that came to fascinate me. As I read the text/scores for Perfect Lives (Private Parts), 1978, and Atalanta (Acts of God), 1980, and read the countless reviews of the American and European performances, it became clear that the ideas expressed in the text and the idiosyncratic use of the language deserved critical analysis which had yet to be done.
